Local fire and emergency services report: calls up; township hiring full‑time firefighters

A report to the Council on Sept. 5 covered local fire and emergency services. A Michiana Shores Volunteer Fire Department summary (presented on behalf of Gary Bendix) said the department responded to five fire‑related calls in August and reminded residents to save the date for its Annual Pancake Breakfast on Oct. 12 from 7 a.m. to noon (Central Time).
New Buffalo Township Fire Chief Jamie Flick reported the township responded to 41 calls in August, including five within Michiana; year‑to‑date calls were 43 higher than last year's average. Chief Flick said the township board approved hiring two full‑time firefighters (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.) starting Sept. 22 and cautioned residents that trucks may be seen driving for training as the new hires learn the area. The department noted Community Connect program enrollment at 110+ residents/businesses and that crews helped install smoke detectors in nearby communities.
Chief Flick also described upcoming fundraisers (a 5K run on Sept. 20 and a restaurant give‑back on Sept. 28) and said proceeds will support the Friends of New Buffalo Township Fire and youth Raider football teams. No formal Council action was taken on staffing or program items during the Sept. 5 meeting.
