The Village of Michiana Council voted unanimously Sept. 5 to continue a moratorium on new short‑term rental registrations through 2026 while it considers potential changes to the short‑term rental ordinance.
"I move to keep the moratorium on any new rental registrations until 2026," Council President Tim McCarthy said during the meeting, and the motion passed with all members in favor. Council members discussed proposals including rental caps, a lottery system for permits, nontransferability of rental privileges upon sale, minimum rental periods (five–seven nights during summer, three nights otherwise), occupancy limits based on bedrooms, parking requirements, and a potential three‑strike enforcement rule.
Council noted the Village currently has 37 registered short‑term rentals. Officials set a public workshop for 11:00 a.m. EST on Oct. 10, prior to the regular 1:00 p.m. meeting, to gather resident input. Julie Bonnelo urged residents to participate and linked the discussion to the Master Plan process.
The moratorium preserves the status quo while staff and councilors consider ordinance language and enforcement mechanisms; no specific amendments were adopted at the Sept. 5 meeting. Next steps: the Oct. 10 workshop and further Council consideration following public input.
