Commissioner: letters sent to seek grants for public-safety radio replacement; interim repair funded

Commissioner Colene M. Martin updated the Board on the county public safety radio communications system and reported that letters have been sent to three state or congressional representatives seeking information about possible grants or loans to assist with repair and replacement costs. The Board previously approved approximately $85,000 for an interim repair and the necessary equipment has been ordered; projected delivery is approximately September 11, 2026 despite efforts to expedite the order.
Martin said the radio system supports the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management and other first responders and that it has been repaired repeatedly but requires complete modernization. She said she will continue exploring FEMA, State Emergency Management and other grant opportunities before the County considers alternative financing for a full replacement project.
