Kendall County declares 30-day local disaster over New World screwworm threat

Kendall County’s commissioners voted 5–0 on June 23 to adopt Order O-20260623-2, a 30‑day declaration of local disaster to respond to the documented threat of the New World screwworm.
Judge Storoznick introduced the measure saying the declaration ‘‘activates our emergency management measures, addresses coordination with state and federal agencies, and authorizes the use of Kendall County resources’’ to respond to the pest threat. County staff and commissioners described confirmed cases in neighboring counties and recent regional meetings with state agriculture officials and neighboring county leaders.
Commissioners said the declaration will both alert residents and preserve eligibility for potential future funding. Commissioner Wiegand and Commissioner McCall explained the county has been in regular contact with state and regional partners and recommended heightened vigilance by livestock owners and pet owners. The court signed the order after the unanimous vote.
The declaration is set for 30 days and directs county staff to coordinate with state authorities and to use county resources as needed; any operational details, reimbursable expenses, or follow-up reports will be handled by the county emergency-management staff and reported back to the court.
