Resident asks county to consider 2,000-foot setbacks for high-voltage transmission lines

T. Sue Engelmann told the Brookings County Planning & Zoning Commission she is concerned about overhead transmission lines and asked the county to match Deuel County’s setbacks, proposing a 2,000-foot buffer from inhabited residences for lines greater than 345 kilovolts.
The commission did not take formal action but agreed to place the item on the April agenda for further discussion. County Development Director Robert Hill asked Chair Chad Ford to add the topic to the April meeting, and Ford agreed. The scheduling means staff will have an opportunity to prepare background materials, including comparisons to neighboring counties and any legal or jurisdictional limits that apply to county regulation of transmission corridors.
