County historian accepts $15,000 for America 250 events; plans Sept. 5 history fair

Griffin Bates, Steuben County Historian, requested and received committee authorization to accept $15,000 from the NYS 250th Commemorative Committee to support America 250 commemorative activities. The motion to accept the funds passed 5-0; a formal resolution is required.
Bates outlined plans for a history fair on Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pulteney Park that would include tents from local historical societies, music by Singers for Democracy, and reenactment groups—Bates said he would attempt to bring the Lexington Minutemen and other local historical figures’ reenactors. He also proposed creating a Steuben County America 250 Committee to help organize the event and said he will present the committee proposal at the next meeting. Additionally, Bates noted the county will mark its 230th anniversary (March 8) and asked the committee to recognize a project to add four plaques to the Hornell Civil War Soldiers Monument in Hope Cemetery; Bates estimated close to 1,000 names exist in county records and said the plaques would list those killed, wounded, missing, prisoners of war or who died in service.
