Prevention Coalition: 47 overdoses, 4 fatalities reported; training and outreach ongoing

Connie Terry and Lauren Mault of the Steuben Prevention Coalition updated the board on overdose trends and prevention activities.
Terry reported that the county is "trending high on ODs so far this year" with 47 overdoses and four fatalities; of the fatalities two were attributed to heroin, one to a prescription pill and one is unknown. She said all four received Narcan. The coalition has trained 17 people at Bridges to Hope and the Caton Fire Department trained 12 people and will return in March to train more; some Avoca students will also receive Narcan training.
The coalition will observe Black Balloon Day on March 6 with a social media campaign rather than an in‑person event and is working on a medication lockbox designed to be easier for seniors to use while keeping medicines secure. Board members acknowledged the reported rise in overdoses and discussed training expansion and outreach to at‑risk groups.
