The Elko County Budget Committee recommended deferring a $30,000 request for the treasurer’s fund to cover the cost of reprinting and rebilling tax bills after an error abated the school district capital fund on the first tax run.
Staff said the treasurer’s office must resend the corrected bills and suggested contingency funding as an option because the county has not completed its audit and beginning fund balances are not yet finalized. "We have to resend them out," a committee member said, adding that contingency could be used until the audit clarifies the starting balances. The Chair proposed letting the request 'ride' through the audit and then augmenting funds if needed.
A committee member moved to delay final approval until after the audit and the motion carried after a second. The committee will forward a recommendation to the County Commission with the audit caveat; staff said they will monitor fund balances and augment once audit results are available. The action was advisory and the commission retains final authority.
