Public‑safety budgeting was a major focus of Wednesday’s workshop. Commissioners reviewed capital requests for emergency services — ambulance purchase (~$369,000) and ambulance equipment (~$177,000) — and heard from detention leadership about a proposed $103,000 Bosch video server upgrade and a $43,000 replacement vehicle.
The sheriff requested four additional deputies to increase patrol capacity. After discussing hiring, outfitting and vehicle costs (staff estimated an approximate additional $40,000–$100,000 per deputy when equipment and vehicles are included), the court tentatively approved funding two deputies in FY2027 and to consider two more next year.
EMS leaders also discussed changing certain runs to 48/96 shift schedules to improve recruitment and retention; commissioners and staff asked EMS to return with a full cost and operational analysis for any shift‑structure change. Commissioners also discussed the county’s in‑house CDL training and other efforts to reduce recruitment costs.
