Fire chief warns of continued dry conditions, outlines reseeding and rancher support after recent fires

"Looking at the short and midterm forecast, we'll still have pretty dry conditions of October and then we're hoping November brings us a little," Chief Peterson said, adding that the district cautions the public against open burning and expects to conduct some prescribed fires and managed burns later in the season.
Peterson also updated commissioners on suppression repairs and follow-up for recent fires: county crews repaired dozer lines and roads, assisted with fence repairs and will reseed dozer lines in the fall as part of suppression work. He cited an emergency stabilization seeding after the Midas fire that covered about 700 acres using a quick-germination annual seed intended to stabilize slopes for one year while longer-term reseeding plans are developed. Peterson offered to follow up with ranchers about any cattle losses and to coordinate with BLM and the Forest Service on reseeding and allotment recovery.
Commissioner Stenger had asked whether ranchers lost cattle in a Tuscarora fire; the chief said he had not received confirmed reports of cattle losses and would follow up. The board requested that staff keep commissioners informed about reseeding progress and rancher impacts.
