Blaine County commissioners push coordination, not duplication, on water conservation

On June 4, 2026, the Blaine County Board of County Commissioners heard public comment and staff presentations urging the county to coordinate water-conservation work with state and regional partners rather than duplicate existing efforts. Commenters and board members repeatedly pointed to resources at the Idaho Department of Water Resources, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality, and regional groups as places to build on existing data and programs.
Pat McMahon of Sun Valley, who identified experience on the Idaho Water Resource Board and in groundwater administration, recommended the county “build on existing work and expertise” and provide clear information to property owners about water-availability limits as agricultural parcels convert to smaller residential lots. Former Commissioner Larry Schoen urged reliance on prior USGS studies and groundwater-management groups and asked for clear legal guidance on the county’s authority on water matters.
Board members and local partners signaled support for near-term, practical collaboration. Wood River Land Trust Director Cece Albertson offered to connect the county with ongoing research and forecasting from WRLT and the University of Idaho and encouraged expanded public education. Sustainability Coordinator Eve Preucil noted the 5B Climate Action Network includes more than 100 partners and four task forces, recommending that the county strengthen those partnerships to avoid duplicative committees.
The Board scheduled continued discussion at the June 8 Workshop on Sustainability, Project Priorities, and Budget Planning. No formal motions or votes were taken at the June 4 special session.
