Finance committee hears budget timeline, staffing requests ahead of Sept. reading

City of Westfield Executive Chief of Staff Danielle Carey Tolan updated the finance committee on the 2026–27 budget process, saying departments have submitted their initial requests and staff are meeting with the mayor to refine priorities based on a mayoral white paper. "For the record, this is Danielle Carey Tolan, the executive chief of staff for the city of Westfield," she began, and said counselor budget workshops will begin in early August.
Tolan gave calendar targets for the formal process: "The 1st reading for the budget will be September 8, and our hopes for the adoption consideration will be October 12," she said, noting that those dates allow time for gateway and state submission deadlines. Committee members pressed for more detail on headcount. Tolan and finance staff said the city is likely to seek roughly eight additional positions overall (including finance), with police expected to add seven new officers as part of their strategic plan. The clerk-treasurer and council members agreed staff will provide detailed line items to counselors before the reading.
