Advisory board supports exploring roadkill salvage rules to reduce waste and aid donations
Summary
The CAB voted to support developing a salvage law to allow reported vehicle-killed or otherwise dead wildlife to be salvaged under safeguards. NDOW staff recommended forms, photos, time windows and potential fees; game wardens discussed enforcement and public-safety tradeoffs.
The board reviewed a proposal (originating with Churchill County) to permit salvage of animals killed by vehicles or otherwise deceased and to allow the meat to be put to use rather than wasted. Jason Jackson (game warden supervisor) described prior successful practices in other states: callers would submit photos and a short report online, wardens would determine whether the meat was fit for harvest, antlers or horns could be collected by the state, and processed meat could be donated.
Discussion covered possible nominal fees to cover administrative time, public-safety funding to respond to road incidents, limits on what may be salvaged, and potential pitfalls (spoiled meat, people intentionally causing collisions, or intentionally failing to report). After hearing examples from Idaho and recommendations about short online forms, the CAB moved to support development of a salvage law to be designed with straightforward reporting and necessary safeguards; the motion carried.
