Kendall County commissioners debated a proposed reorganization of the county’s grant function on July 13 and decided to replace the existing grant coordinator role with a higher-classification grant manager to centralize grant-writing, procurement coordination and compliance. Proponents said the new position (classification 17) would manage judicial and nonjudicial grants, assist with procurement and reporting, and help departments that currently rely on a part-time contractor.
The district attorney and sheriff’s office emphasized operational dependence on grant expertise and warned the court that losing current assistance would create operational gaps. Commissioners voiced caution about creating an ongoing personnel cost; the majority ultimately directed the auditor to eliminate the current coordinator and add a grant manager under department 401 (commissioner’s court) with contingency funding and a hiring committee to establish performance metrics and oversight. Staff were instructed to return with job classification, salary numbers and a proposed contingency amount for contract labor to cover seasonal workload spikes.
