Senior center asks county to boost funding as meal deliveries and demand climb

The senior center appearing before Kendall County commissioners said July 13 that county funding of $21,000 annually covers only a fraction of the center’s roughly $2 million operating budget and highlighted demand: about 56,000 home-delivered meals annually to 308 homebound older adults, 250 daily participants and more than 62,000 annual check-ins for meals and activities.

The center requested that the county increase its contribution to $100,000, which the presenter said would support Meals on Wheels continuity, transportation partnerships with Alamo Regional Transit and facility needs. “For every $1 received from government sources, the center generates nearly $5 through community support, grants and earned revenue,” the presenter said. Commissioners probed the share of funding that comes from Kendall County, grant-match requirements, and the structure of proposed transportation partnerships. One commissioner suggested raising the Meals on Wheels allocation from $15,000 to $20,000 while holding general operations funding steady; another said he had earmarked $200,000 in his budget pending a clear transportation proposal from Alamo Regional Transit.

The court asked staff to obtain more detailed cost and match numbers for the proposed transit partnership and to provide precise counts of delivered meals over multiple years so the court can evaluate whether increases should be tied to demand metrics. The county did not adopt a final dollar figure for the center’s full $100,000 request in this session but approved smaller interim increases for Meals on Wheels funding to be folded into the FY27 deliberations.
