Council unanimously appoints Donnie Crawford to at-large seat; swearing-in set for 3 p.m.

The Council of the District of Columbia voted unanimously on Jan. 20 to appoint Donnie Crawford as the interim at-large councilmember to fill the vacancy left when Kenya McDuffie resigned on Jan. 5. Chairman Mendelson introduced the appointment resolution, noting it was noticed Jan. 14 and that a revised version circulated Jan. 19.

Chairman Mendelson summarized Ms. Crawford’s experience on council staff and at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, saying she has “broad support” among members and that her knowledge of council operations would be useful during upcoming performance oversight and the budget cycle. Several councilmembers offered endorsements on the floor. “Donnie has been an integral part to so much of the work that has been done here at the council over the years and the district more broadly,” one member said in support.

Members noted there were about 42 applicants for the vacancy and praised the competitive pool. Councilmember Robert White described the appointment as “very consequential” and said Crawford’s experience would position the council to continue “serious effective work on behalf of the city.”

A roll call vote was requested and taken; the clerk announced 12 yes votes and the resolution was approved unanimously. Chairman Mendelson said the swearing-in was scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the council chambers that afternoon.

The resolution appoints Donnie Crawford to serve through certification of the special election results. No amendments or dissent were recorded during the meeting.
