Councilmember Pinto said fully staffing public safety agencies is critical and moved emergency legislation to remove mandatory retirement ages for the Metropolitan Police Department and Fire/EMS to retain institutional knowledge and experienced personnel. Pinto said MPD and Fire/EMS supported the measure and that regular medical examinations through the Police and Fire Clinic would remain required.
Pinto also moved an amendment to the emergency that struck provisions expanding the senior officer program so the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety can continue considering those changes as permanent legislation. The amendment and the emergency bill as amended passed unanimously on the floor.
