Vernon County opens command center, shelter after April 2 tornadoes; inspections and insurance follow

On April 2, 2025, Vernon County officials spent the morning assessing damage from early-morning tornadoes and set up emergency operations: Centennial Hall was designated a command center for first responders and the Community Center opened as a shelter for residents.

The commissioners met with the county Emergency Response Team to evaluate damages and outline immediate next steps. Commissioner John Shorten delivered boxes of supplies to the command center. Nathan Forkner, Vernon County Fairboard President, reported that "nails on the diner roof have been pulled out by the strong winds," an example of structural damage noted during assessments.

A county visitor, Marvin Knoche, told commissioners there was damage in the Country Club area and that train cars had been overturned next to the Inetvisions, LLC offices, adding to the tally of incident reports emergency managers must track. The county also recorded receipt of an insurance policy copy from Brent Banes, the Collector/Treasurer, for potential claims coordination.

Insurance representative Casey Chastain of Higginbotham Financial Services and Insurance later visited county sites, inspecting damage at Katy Allen Lake and the fairgrounds. The commission returned a Request for Reimbursement and a Pay Request for BRO-R108(46-Hinkle Bridge) to MoDOT by email as part of concurrent infrastructure and recovery administration.

The commission adjourned at 4:00 p.m. and is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, April 8, 2025; officials indicated they will continue coordinating inspections, sheltering and insurance processes in the near term.
