Council approves four appointments including Larry Acevedo to Planning & Zoning

Mayor Fred Hashimoto opened the meeting's appointment segment by introducing the first nominee, Larry Acevedo, for the Planning & Zoning Commission and asking him to address the council.

Acevedo said the commission should evaluate land-use applications using the village ordinances that implement the comprehensive plan, and recommended taking ordinances as the operative rules while suggesting the council and mayor decide when ordinances or the plan need amendment. "The ordinances in principle support the comprehensive plan, but there's nothing in the comprehensive plan that says 'thou shalt do this,'" Acevedo said, describing how he would rely on applicable ordinances in his work.

Councilors asked how he would handle conflicts between the comprehensive plan and existing ordinances; Acevedo said the commission's role is to evaluate and recommend changes as needed. Councilor Murray moved to approve Acevedo and the motion was seconded; the council voted to confirm him.

The council next approved Michelle for the Bosque Advisory Commission and reappointed Jeff Radford and Dayton Voorhees to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. Each nominee answered brief questions from councilors about their experience and priorities before votes carried.
