Mayor gives summer update: Route 18 lanes expected open by mid‑August; art center expansion is grant‑funded

Mayor Brad Cohen used his report to update residents and the council on several summer projects and town priorities.
On Route 18 he relayed the state's projected schedule: "they expect that by the end of the 2nd week of August, all lanes on Route 18 will be free flowing in all directions with the remaining pavement work to be completed at night and no operational impact to AM or PM rush." Cohen emphasized that Route 18 is a state road and that the DOT is leading the project.
The mayor also announced the township received state grant funding for a community art center expansion; the work — including improvements to the outdoor stage, seating, lighting and sound — is slated to begin this fall after East Brunswick Day and is fully grant‑funded, he said. Cohen noted the township is coordinating with the Arts Commission and intends to complete the project before year end.
On municipal operations, Cohen said the pavement program is ahead of schedule and described coordination with PSE&G and county crews to limit repeated digs. He also described plans for extended Crystal Springs evening hours at select dates to improve access for residents who work until later in the day.
