Commission approves vacating portion of Jeff Loop Road after county acquisition and creek work

The commission approved a staff recommendation July 28, 2026 to vacate a portion of Jeff Loop Road and the now-defunct lots along the roadway, a change staff says is needed because Bexar County acquired and reconfigured property and the creek was reconstructed. Staff explained the change will update official maps and county appraisal records and cited state law in support: “Texas transportation code chapter 311, section 311.001 states that the city has exclusive control over ... public highway streets and alleys of the municipality,” the staff presentation said.
Staff described the technical steps that will follow: city engineers will prepare a Mylar for recording and the city will submit the new map to Bexar County to correct BCAD records. Commissioners asked about historic lot lines and whether structures had been present; staff and a commissioner recounted that homes had once existed but many lots became part of a county acquisition. The motion to vacate passed by voice vote; staff noted the city will incur costs for recordation and mapping updates.
