The La Porte City Council authorized the city manager to execute a contract with Craftsman Commercial Playgrounds & Waterparks using cooperative BuyBoard pricing for renovation and a covered pavilion at Northwest Park.
Staff described the project as expanding an existing 1.5 courts configuration into two full-size courts, resurfacing both courts, and constructing a fully lighted, covered pavilion to protect users from sun and rain and to improve year-round programming options. The contract price is $449,247.29 with a contingency of $44,925.71 for a total authorization of $494,173; the La Porte Development Corporation had budgeted $750,000 for the project.
Council members pressed for clarification about whether the pavilion was a welded structure or a bolt-up structure; staff’s packet drawings and a staff response confirmed the vendor’s design is a bolted structure (preferred by at least one councilmember for longevity). After that clarification, council voted to approve the contract.
Staff said the project came in under budget relative to the allocation, and any remaining funds would go back to LPDC or be used for other park improvements per budget procedures.
