City attorney warns of 2027 DEI certification requirement for contractors

City Attorney Jerry informed the Avon Park City Council on July 27 about a new legislative requirement that will affect municipal contracting beginning Jan. 1, 2027.
Jerry said a house bill passed this year will require contractors that receive city funds to provide a nondiscrimination/DEI certification. He recommended that the city include the language in any contracts or grant agreements that will remain in effect on Jan. 1, 2027, and noted subcontractors should be required to comply where applicable. "Any contracts that are in effect at 01/01/2027 will have to be amended to include that same certificate," Jerry told the council.
The attorney said he had prepared proposed language and sent it to the city manager; staff will incorporate the requirement into future RFPs and contract documents as needed.
