Council member to resign; seat vacancy raises election timing question

A member of the Avon Park City Council announced at the July 27 meeting that she will relocate outside the city limits and submitted her resignation effective Sept. 15, 2026.
The councilmember said she and her husband will be leaving the city and that she will no longer meet residency requirements to hold office. "Serving the citizens of Avon Park has truly been a great honor," the councilmember said, and asked that her resignation be placed in the public record.
Mayor Garrett Anderson and City Attorney Jerry said they would review charter language and the qualifying calendar to determine whether the vacancy could be added to the forthcoming election. Jerry told the council he and the clerk would "figure it out and bring it to you next meeting." The attorney also noted the charter contains provisions on appointment and election timing that staff would need to interpret.
The council did not take immediate action to fill the seat during the meeting. The council directed staff to return with guidance on options and any relevant deadlines.
