Residents press council for study, cite water and rate concerns over potential data centers

Several residents told the council they support thorough study before permitting large data centers in Marshalltown. April Long (speaker 15), who said she lives on the far eastern side of town, opposed development that could risk the city's water supply and questioned the number of permanent jobs such projects would actually create. "If they're mostly automated, you're not going to get that many permanent jobs," she said.
Other commenters echoed those concerns with concrete examples. Brandy Glick (speaker 14) cited recent Iowa projects and said communities have paid millions to expand treatment capacity and transmission: "The city spent millions expanding water treatment to serve META," she said, and noted provisions in state law she summarized as giving long tax exemptions to facilities. Zachary Hamilton (speaker 16) and others emphasized setbacks, noise standards and the need for ordinance definitions that fit data-center technology. Commenters repeatedly asked for citations and for planning and zoning to hold public meetings so residents could see evidence and ask questions.
