The Lakeside Union Board opened a public hearing under Education Code 47605(b) on Feb. 13 to consider the renewal petition for Barona Charter School. President Lara Hoefer Moir noted an error on the agenda and clarified the correct renewal term is July 1, 2025–June 30, 2030.
Barona Charter School Board Chairman and Principal Julie Cushman spoke in favor of renewal, saying the school maintains a strong connection to native culture and that staff have worked to improve outcomes over the past five years. Cushman said implementing NWEA MAPS testing has helped improve test scores and described Barona Charter as "a unique gem of the District." One community member and one Barona teacher also spoke in support during public comment.
