Cayuga County IT to roll out AI training after adoption of AI policy

After the Legislature adopted a county AI policy in December, IT staff told the committee they will begin mandatory AI training mid-January and will prohibit AI use with confidential data while exploring Copilot-style tools for help-desk summaries and trend analysis.
Tom Bunn, representing County Information Technology, told the Government Operations Committee on Jan. 13 that IT will begin rolling out mandatory AI training for all county staff starting mid-January following the Legislature’s adoption of a Cayuga County AI Policy in December.
Bunn said the training will explain which AI tools are approved for county use, clarify appropriate and prohibited uses (specifically prohibiting AI on confidential and protected data), and require employees to sign a user agreement accepting accountability for AI-generated content. The IT department characterized the policy as proactive and risk-based and said it will be incorporated into annual IT security training.
Bunn also described internal pilots to use Microsoft Copilot-style tools to summarize help-desk tickets and perform trend analysis to proactively address recurring issues, while emphasizing that any AI use must comply with the county’s prohibition on processing confidential data. The IT report packaged the AI work with other technology initiatives including a Windows 11 rollout (over 80% of endpoints deployed) and ongoing enterprise resource planning planning.
