Trustee Samik Modi asked the board to pause and broaden community engagement for three policies related to artificial intelligence (policy 4.41 and student technology policies). Modi said the district’s AI task force currently consists of faculty and staff and suggested involving parents and students to gather a range of perspectives before finalizing policy language. "One of the things that I realized was ... we are 2 years behind on updates," Modi said, urging staff to propose a different approach for staying current on policy updates and to include community voices for AI policy drafting.
Superintendent Dr. Nicholas described a phased rollout of AI work that has included staff and some student surveys and a professional development day; he recommended an information presentation to the board showing what staff has begun and what is planned. "We've done a long rollout in multiple phases... But I think what we're missing from this particular conversation... is a presentation on all of the things that we're doing so you can see a broad spectrum," he said. The board voted to adopt the second reading of updated board policies and directed staff to return with a plan to catch up on the policy backlog and to present the district’s AI work to the board.
