District reports near-8,050 enrollment and details overflow/transfer process at board meeting

The assistant superintendent explained registrations are submitted through the Aeries system and an enrollment is considered complete only after required documents (proof of address, birth certificate, etc.) are received; that completion date determines placement and waitlist order.
The presentation identified Cortez (Cortes) Elementary as an outlier with 120 students on overflow; the assistant superintendent said 76 of those 120 are transitional kindergarten (TK) students. Since the start of the school year staff have returned 28 students to their school of residence and 31 families declined the return offer. The assistant superintendent also said the district has denied 68 interdistrict transfer requests this year, largely for space or because of attendance, discipline or academic concerns.
Trustees probed operational details including whether employee transfers are processed ahead of community requests and how the district batches transfers. The assistant superintendent said employee interdistrict transfers are typically processed earlier and many other transfers are handled in the order received, though some batching occurs for processing. When asked about address verification, the assistant superintendent said the district began with eighth-grade verification last year and plans to repeat eighth grade this cycle and likely add fifth grade next, noting the process is time-consuming and "quite time consuming," and that some families were disenrolled last year when necessary verification was not provided.
"So when we look at our student student enrollment across sites, we have a big variation with Lambertville Elementary School ... to our largest elementary school, Hanson, with 915," the assistant superintendent said. Trustees asked the assistant superintendent to provide follow-up numbers on how many students were disenrolled during verification and other requested data points for board consideration.
