Technology director presents updated Acceptable Use Policy; board opens brief public comment period

Peter James, the district’s director of technology, presented the annual Acceptable Use Policy for district networks, devices and accounts and invited questions from the board.
"If staff or students are using the accounts provided by the district or the hardware provided by the district to further their education... they're acceptably using the student and staff hardware and software," James said, describing the policy’s core premise that district-issued accounts and devices are for educational purposes.
James outlined policy components including purpose, responsibilities for staff and students, standards of use, system access, parent notification, liability and due process. He told the board the district’s network is filtered and monitored in accordance with the federal Child Internet Protection Act and that the district maintains and protects user accounts against cybersecurity threats.
Board members asked how recently issued state guidance on internet-enabled personal devices and "bell-to-bell" restrictions affect classrooms. James and board members clarified the distinction between district-issued and personal devices: district-issued devices remain supported and monitored; students should not bring personal devices to school going forward to ensure compliance with state guidance and to enable district monitoring.
The board opened a special 15-minute public-comment period on policy 2361 (acceptable use); no members of the public spoke. The presentation concluded with a reminder that the district will notify parents of policies through the student handbook, school communications and the student information system.
