County attorney warns Clay County in 'very poor standing' with KDHE; meeting set to resolve landfill inspection issues

Brenda Jordan, Clay County Attorney, told the Board she reviewed a packet from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) that included photographs identical to those submitted in 2024. Jordan said the duplicate photos raised concern that problems at the county landfill had not been corrected and stated the county is currently in "very poor standing" with KDHE.
Landfill Director Rhonda Carroll said she may have submitted the same photos twice by accident and the parties agreed to convene a meeting including the commissioners, two engineers, the County Attorney and the Landfill Director to fully understand and resolve the issues. The board also authorized repairs to a broken recycling truck window and approved purchasing asphalt millings from Ken Shivers at $6.00 per ton as needed.
