Clark County Adopts 7-Ton Per Axle Load Limit, Orders 45 MPH Posting on Paved Roads

The Clark County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 6 adopted Resolution 7-26, which sets the county road load limit at "seven ton per axle" for a full 75-day period beginning on or after March 1, 2026, citing SDCL 32-14-16. Commissioner Chris Sass moved for adoption; Commissioner Sara Gjerde seconded and the motion passed with "All voting aye. Motion carried." The resolution directs that signs be erected and maintained and that the South Dakota Highway PatrolMotor Carrier Enforcement Officer be requested to assist with weighing vehicles for compliance.
Resolution 7-26 also specifies speed postings on paved county roads: "Paved County Roads within the County of Clark, South Dakota, shall be 45 Miles Per Hour from January 1, to December 31 of each year, commencing with the year 2026." The resolution allows gravel roads to be posted as needed and notes the resolution will be effective each year unless repealed or modified.
