Council directs staff to run public survey on e-bikes, scooters and other alternative mobility while awaiting county action

Council members and staff discussed alternative mobility vehicles — including e-bikes, scooters, UTVs and golf carts — and whether Florence should act before or after Boone County's anticipated consideration of alternative mobility standards. Council heard that the county’s physical court expects to address standards in September or October and that local rules could be better aligned if council waits.

Safety concerns were raised after a child was struck in a neighboring jurisdiction and council members questioned enforcement options for juveniles. One council speaker observed, "the reason we can't handle them because there's no laws on bikes and electric bikes," noting limitations on issuing citations. Mr. Hunt recommended public engagement and asked, "How about a free survey? We'll try to hit the timeline that I proposed, and then wait and see what the physical court comes up with." The council directed staff to begin a no-cost public survey to gather input and to return with results and possible next steps once the county's position is clearer.
