Environmental Services Director Justin Craig proposed a county Tire Day to help residents and farmers dispose of tires. The draft plan called for a Saturday in June from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a free threshold (draft 1,000 pounds per vehicle; commissioners discussed reducing to 500 pounds), exclusion of businesses, and a discounted fee (proposed $100 per ton for excess) to cover most removal costs.
Commissioners expressed caution about potential high volumes and cost—Sedgwick County’s experience (cited during discussion) cost about $250,000 to remove a very large volume—but supported trying a one‑day pilot and directed staff to finalize logistics, including vehicle-ID verification, no-rims preference and tarping enforcement. "So significantly lower, then that would cover most of the cost that ever removed," Craig said when describing the proposed fee structure.
