Council adopts zoning changes to allow single‑family detached, attached and duplex dwellings downtown

Councilmember Lance Beethe introduced an ordinance to modify the Tecumseh Zoning Ordinance by deleting section 5.12.03.14 and adding sections 5.12.02.13, 5.12.02.14 and 5.12.02.15 to allow single‑family detached dwellings, single‑family attached dwellings and two‑family duplex dwellings in the downtown redevelopment area. The council approved waiving the statutory rule requiring three separate readings and voted to publish the ordinance in pamphlet form and approve final passage; recorded votes were unanimous among those present (Goracke absent).
City staff and the city attorney framed the change as intended to broaden housing options downtown, consistent with the Downtown Revitalization effort and pending DTR funding. The ordinance amendment and the blight designation together are meant to enable redevelopment projects in the downtown corridor.
