Residents urge county to address near-term crime as jail project timelines stretch

During the public-comment period, Springfield Township resident Diana Daniels urged the commissioners to meet with the sheriff about immediate crime responses while the county’s jail project lags several years behind schedule. "The conversation needs to be about what to do about crime now. I see an issue down the road with vigilante justice," Daniels said.
Commissioner Charles A. Patterson acknowledged the concern and explained that after a failed sales tax levy the county lacks short-term funds to acquire and build a facility immediately. He said the commission has grant capacity for acquisition but that construction timelines and inflation mean the county must consider multiple locations and approaches. Commissioners also discussed using some property tax revenues to contribute to the project over time, but noted the projected $12 million (estimated at $600,000 per year) will not cover inflation on a large facility.
