Officials agree to pursue vertical expansion that could extend county landfill life to 20 years

Environmental Services Superintendent Darlene Selley and BG Consultants Engineer Brian Foster told the Jackson County Board of County Commissioners that the county's current construction and demolition (C&D) landfill cell has roughly five years of remaining capacity but could be extended to about 20 years by building a berm and moving to a 20-foot vertical expansion.
KDHE noted water seepage during its last inspection but has given conceptual approval to the vertical expansion plan; Foster said the project may require additional approval for a new catch pond. BG Consulting estimated its consulting fees for the work at $38,563 and Selley told the board that landfill capital outlay funds are available to cover those consulting costs. Chairman Mark Pruett said he favored moving forward and the board reached consensus to proceed toward surveying and dirt work, likely this fall.
The proposal is part of a multi‑phase plan (the meeting record refers to phase 3 of 4) to extend the life of the facility without locating a new cell. The Superintendent and engineer will return with survey-ready plans and any additional KDHE conditions. The board did not adopt an ordinance or formal resolution at the meeting; next steps are design, permitting and scheduling of dirt work.
