RPO recommends two local walking/biking projects for CMAQ funding

The Tooele Valley Rural Planning Organization on March 9 voted to recommend two Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) projects for further review by Region 2 and the Utah State Transportation Commission.
UDOT planner Grant Barnesworth described both applications. The ERDA project would create two asphalt pathway segments linking Church Road to Rabbit Lane and the Bates Canyon Pathway, providing walking and biking access to a junior high, a high school and Rose Springs Elementary. Barnesworth said the ERDA engineer’s estimate includes a calculated daily emissions savings of “0.75 kilograms” and that the project exceeds the benefit‑cost threshold for CMAQ funding. The Lake Point project would extend an asphalt path along Saddleback Boulevard from SR‑36 east to a roundabout and connect to a planned UTA bus stop, providing first‑ and last‑mile access for transit riders; Barnesworth said its estimated total cost is "$300,000, with the local match of $20,000."
After brief questions, council chair Birch moved to recommend both projects and the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The RPO’s recommendation will be passed to Region 2 and the State Transportation Commission for final funding decisions. Staff said UDOT will contact applicants to help with next steps in the CMAQ application process.
The RPO did not take final funding action; final authorization rests with the region and the state commission. The RPO’s record lists the ERDA pathway and Lake Point Saddleback Boulevard projects for the CMAQ application cycle and staff will distribute next steps to applicants.
