Highway Administrator reports bridge inspection, chip-seal prep and truck repair options

Bobby Shomper, Highway Administrator, gave the department's weekly report, saying crews bladed roads, mowed roadsides, completed shop repairs, moved equipment to start a chip-seal project, and re-planked the bridge on Parallel Road west of Vining. "The new bridge on Utah Rd has been inspected and no weight limit at this time," Shomper told the Board.
Shomper reported a roof leak at the County shop; the Board authorized him to work with County Maintenance (Ryan West) to make repairs and granted permission to purchase materials. He also reported the Blue Kenworth semi has been sent to Salina for repairs similar to those that cost about $25,000 three years ago and said the County may want to consider trading the truck if repairs are similarly costly. Shomper presented prices and photos for three used Kenworth semis from MHC priced at $203,850 total; MHC offered a discount to $180,000 if all three were purchased together. Commissioner Carlson said the County did not need three semis at once; the Board asked Shomper to explore other trucks and return with repair estimates from MHC before deciding.
The Board's directions included researching alternative truck sources and awaiting a repair estimate for the semi currently in shop. No formal purchase motion was made at the meeting.
