Ellis County to pilot one-day tire amnesty event in June

Environmental Services Director Justin Craig proposed testing a one-day tire amnesty event in June 2026 to provide residents a low-cost way to dispose of tires. Craig outlined proposed logistics: a 1,000-pound per-vehicle free allowance, separate pile for rims, a discounted $100 per ton rate on overage weight and farmers would be allowed to participate while businesses would not.
Commissioners expressed general support: Commissioner Nathan Leiker said he was open to a one-day event and Chair Neal Younger and Commissioner Michael Berges discussed logistics such as tarping and staffing. Craig said current removal prices are $160 per ton and that staff will return with a final event draft. The commission directed Craig to move forward with planning.
If finalized, the event will test community demand for a short, low-cost disposal option and establish operational procedures for staff to manage tire flows and waste hauling.
