Ellis County approves 2025 noxious-weed report and 2026 management plan
Summary
Ellis County commissioners approved the Annual Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report for 2025 and the county's 2026 Noxious Weed Management Plan, as required by Kansas law; supervisors said added staff is producing results.
At the March 10 meeting, Weed Control Supervisor Gary Haas asked the board to approve the county's 2025 Annual Noxious Weed Eradication Progress Report and the 2026 Management Plan, both required under the Kansas Noxious Weed Law to maintain county program approval.
Haas summarized the report's components: a financial summary, a survey of 10 randomly selected sections within Ellis County for noxious weeds, acres of herbicide treatments by weed type, an herbicide disbursement summary and an enforcement summary. Commissioners asked whether additional staff had produced measurable results; Haas said the extra staffing has helped and he is seeing results. Commissioner Michael Berges moved to approve the report and plan, Commissioner Nathan Leiker seconded and the motion passed by voice vote of three to zero.
The plan sets the county's approach to weed control for 2026 and fulfills the state requirement for a county management plan. The board's approval allows the county to submit required signatures and maintain compliance with the Kansas Department of Agriculture program requirements.
