Winn Parish sheriff seeks support for animal-control capacity after increased seizures

Winn Parish Sheriff Josh McAllister reported to the Police Jury that his office has taken about 50 to 60 animals since he assumed office and has invested in kennels at the jail to house seized animals.
"The Sheriff’s office has taken 50 to 60 animals since he took office," McAllister said, and added he may "ask for help in the future to offset an officer’s salary dedicated strictly to this." He noted the parish historically had limited animal-control infrastructure and that jail medical costs are a significant ongoing expense.
McAllister said litter patrols have been reduced while a manager is in academy training and that he is pursuing ways to open ATV trails on Kisatchie National Forest land to bring commerce to the parish, a proposal he said would require federal action.
The Sheriff’s remarks were informational; no formal funding request was voted on during the Sept. 15 meeting.
