Register of Deeds Marcy Merritt reported to the Wabaunsee County Commission that her office processed 176 passports in 2025 and has processed 81 so far in 2026, producing $1,430 in revenue this year, which she said has already covered the cost of a new camera system.
Merritt said the office is replacing light fixtures with LED fixtures while retaining existing hardware. She also informed commissioners that the surveyor the county contracted for survey reviews has terminated that contract. Merritt recommended contracting with Steve Brosemer, a semi-retired surveyor from Emporia, who would charge $25 per survey and be paid directly by customers; the prior review fee had been $50. Merritt framed the change as a taxpayer savings and a process improvement.
