Miami County Emergency Management presented a site-expansion and building proposal to consolidate supplies and fleet and to host a joint fire training facility with the City of Peru and Peru Fire.
Herb Hunt said expanding from roughly 1 acre to 5.5 acres at Spring and Wallace would allow EMA to keep supplies and most of its fleet on one site. The proposed building—about 74 feet by 114 feet—would be half office and half garage, with garage space designed to serve as a Red Cross disaster shelter (not a homeless shelter) and to include locker rooms and showers to support shelter operations. Estimated construction cost is $593,545 with a $100,000 contingency. The site is owned by the City of Peru, so an interlocal memorandum of understanding would be required; the city would fund its training-side portion of the building. Council members noted competing priorities, including a courthouse ADA remodel and an annual $700,000 revenue cut related to SB 1, and said the urgent console replacement should be advanced separately from the broader building project.
