Commissioners approve rezoning for 19 parcels near US 31 interchange; moratorium on data centers set for discussion May 4

Corey Roser of the Planning Department briefed commissioners on a Planning Commission recommendation to correct zoning assignments for 19 parcels near the US 31 interchange. The recommended amendments included multiple A‑1 and A‑2 to B‑2/B‑3 commercial changes and several A‑1/A‑2 to I‑1 industrial corrections; one parcel would move from I‑1 back to A‑1 and two parcels would be changed from B‑3 to A‑2 agricultural where appropriate.
Commissioner Mark Horner moved to approve the rezoning of the 19 parcels as presented and Commissioner Brenda Weaver seconded; the motion passed 3–0. Roser also told the board that planning staff are preparing a data‑center moratorium ordinance and expect to present a proposal at the May 4 commissioners' meeting to pause permitting until the ordinance is finalized and public input is received.
The rezoning is intended to align parcel zoning with current land uses along a major corridor and to correct inconsistent designations. Planning staff characterized the moratorium as a temporary pause while the Planning Commission finalizes an ordinance and solicits thorough public input.
