Wilkes County voted to participate in a remnant-defendant opioid settlement on April 21.
County Attorney Tony Triplett summarized the settlement that groups six remnant defendants into a new nationwide agreement. He said the settlement amount is approximately $97,625,000 and that "a little over $68,000 for Wilkes prior to the reduction for attorneys’ fees" is the County’s expected allocation; he noted attorney fees of about 12% will be withheld. The resolution authorizes the County Manager to execute required participation documents and releases so the County may receive its allocation for opioid remediation strategies.
Commissioner Shirley Randleman moved to approve participation in the settlement and Vice Chairman Evan Handy seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The Board recorded the funds will be used for opioid remediation and related purposes consistent with the settlement documentation.
