Wilkes County backs Wilkesboro resilience-hub application; County not asked for funding

The Board voted to approve a resolution and letter supporting the Town of Wilkesboro's application to develop a Resilience Hub at the Outpost (the former Lowe's corporate headquarters).
Ken Noland, Town Manager for Wilkesboro, described the project as "a resiliency hub, not a recovery hub," explaining the site's role in normal operations and surge support during major weather events. The proposed partnership includes the Town (lead), Friends of Wilkesboro (501(c)(3)), High Country Community Health, Wilkes County Emergency Services, Finley Properties, and Wilkes County Tourism. Noland said High Country Community Health would primarily run daytime dental services and could ramp up medical care during disasters; he also said Friends of Wilkesboro may manage aspects of the project.
The resolution notes the Town will apply to the North Carolina Department of Commerce for Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds tied to Hurricane Helene recovery and that the Town is not asking the County to provide financial resources. Commissioner Bill Sexton moved to approve the letter of support and resolution; Commissioner Casey Johnson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
