Wilkes County honors fourth-grade students in litter-prevention poster contest

The Wilkes County Litter Committee presented its 2026 poster contest awards on April 21.
Solid Waste Director Anderia Byrd told the Board the contest involved six schools and 175 fourth-grade students; the winner, Oliver Cole of C.B. Eller Elementary, earned a class pizza party and recognition. Byrd described the committee's purpose and said "their mission is to promote the importance of litter prevention throughout Wilkes County, helping create a cleaner environment and enhancing the beauty of the community." T-shirts for participants are being provided by the Tourism Development Authority and FSS.
Board members congratulated the winners and thanked the Litter Committee and volunteers. The award was a non-action, ceremonial portion of the agenda but was highlighted as part of local outreach tied to Earth Day.
