Niles council approves downtown Coffee & Car shows and Four Flags Apple Festival, including fireworks permit

The Niles City Council on July 13 authorized several downtown events and related permits. The council approved requests from Niles DDA Main Street to hold Coffee & Car shows on July 19 and Sept. 5, 2026, which include closing three downtown parking lots and additional spaces in the 200 block of Sycamore.
Separately, the council approved the Four Flags Apple Festival to take place Oct. 1–4, 2026, with staff recommendations. The council also approved a permit for Pyrotecnico Fireworks Company to conduct a fireworks display on Oct. 2 as part of the festival. The minutes record one dissenting vote on the Apple Festival approval: Councilmember Michael Thompson voted nay while the other present members voted yes.
Councilmember Jessica Nelson moved to approve the DDA events; the festival and fireworks permit were moved and seconded as shown in the council record. Staff recommendations and public-safety considerations were noted by council and recorded in the meeting minutes.
