The St. James Parish Council introduced an ordinance on May 20 to amend Section 82-25 of the parish land‑use ordinance and change the Shady Grove area designation from agricultural to industrial on the generalized future plan. The council voted to set public hearings for June 3 in Convent and June 17 in Vacherie after the Planning Commission had voted unanimously to recommend the change.
Legal counsel Vic Frankiewicz told the council that the Planning Commission can impose conditions and that "there were no plans as of now" for a specific industrial facility on the site. Councilwoman Vondra Etienne‑Steib pressed for data about existing homes in the area and how older residents might be affected; she requested staff provide information on adjacent properties before hearings. Councilman Ryan Louque noted the subject had been raised previously in 2018 and described the mapped intent as residential/future industrial, indicating the change reflects a prior planning direction.
